Geography Baseline Assessment Pack

"Thanks for the Baseline Assessments they were invaluable! We have a Y7 parents evening very soon and they have allowed us to say something valuable to the parents and also focus on particular individuals that need extra help. Oh and the Head is impressed to...!" Miles Aarons, Jumeirah College

"A very useful set of tests which has allowed us to produce some detailed data about our new pupils. It was fascinating comparing the needs and aptitudes of individual classes. " Andrew Langton, Parkwood School

Why is it important to use a Baseline Assessment?

  • In all schools, including selective schools, there will be a range of abilities entering Year 7. It is useful to have some real data on variations in geographical ability - what the pupils 'know, understand and can-do' in Geography.

  • All schools draw from a range of feeder schools and the new Y7s will have had varying experiences of Geography as a subject. "Researchers identified a steady rise in time spent on the three Rs by juniors in England. The time spent on most other subjects - particularly history and geography - fell over the same period, said a report for the QCDA curriculum watchdog."

  • Baseline Assessment in Geography can be used to support value-added data collected by the department. Much of the baseline data currently offered to departments is based on KS2 performance in the core subjects and/or CAT tests taken upon entry to secondary school. This data, whilst a useful indicator of general ability, is not specific to Geography and does not allow you to collate 'can-do' geographical statements.

  • Baseline data is a useful tool to help departments review their curriculum provision and Schemes of Learning in Y7 once the analysis of what the children 'know and can do' is completed.

  • Some schools use the Baseline Assessments data to provide NC Levels and Target Levels for the end of KS3.

  • Last, but not least - not only will you find it a very useful and interesting exercise to carry out BUT the SMT, Local Authority and OFSTED cannot fail to be impressed by any department that is doing baseline assessment!! Let Geography lead the way...
